There are 107 Commonwealth War and Service Graves at Scampton Church. This project is meant for school children and aims to educate that generation about the meaning of remembrance. It tells the personal stories of those buried here in the first person.

In partnership with Heritage Lincolnshire, schools packs have been developed to link with the national curriculum. Interactive digital screens have been installed to assist visiting children to learn of those personal stories. The package has been fully evaluated. It contains three lesson plans, materials and activities ready for delivery.

The lesson plans can be delivered at Scampton Church by a full day visit, or lesson plan one at school, lesson plan two by a shorter visit to church, and lesson plan three back at school. The resource is free of charge for you to download and use, however if you wish to take advantage of the full days visit run by Scampton Church and War Graves Heritage Centre volunteers a charge of £6 per child would be made.

We are pleased to announce that our exciting new educational project has been awarded the ‘Innovation Award’ at the coveted Ministry of Defence Sanctuary award ceremony held at The Historic Dockyard, Portsmouth.

Objectives

• Understand why the topography of Lincolnshire has resulted in a land use of airfields, and why this land use has changed over time.
• Understand why Scampton Church is an important site for remembrance.
• Understand why Scampton Church is an important local historic site.
• Understand the period of the wold war, and that the people buried all have close living relatives.
• Use a map to locate countries.
• Plot map co-ordinates.
• Find and record key pieces of information in a historical/religious/memorial site independently.
• Research some of the personal stories of people buried at the site.
• Question and understand how different places can make us feel different things.
• Recognise key pieces of remembrance music.
• Understand that music is an important part of the RAF and of Church.
• Recognise that plants and flowers have symbolism, some of which connects with death and remembrance.
• Recognise some key species of plants and trees in Scampton Churchyard.
• Recognise the images of the RAF stained glass windows at Scampton Church.
• Understand that art helps us to remember acts in the past.
• Use what has been learned to create their own window of remembrance.
• Feel a sense of closure after completing the topic.
